A good sense of naming.

A name is important. A name is the first thing delivered to you. Almost all the explanations in the world start from showing a name. If the name is not familiar, it's difficult to understand.

I was in trouble by the name of a technique when I read a paper. There is a technique called "Image scanning microscopy". From this name, I imagined that this was a technique in which an image was scanned. However, the actual meaning is that laser scanning microscopy with detecting images. I struggled with this misunderstanding and took time to understand this technique.

A name of a person also is not used for naming of a scientific word, recently. Previously, the name of a person who invented or discovered was used for the scientific naming. Although it is easy to know the name who did, not easy to understand the meaning of the word. Therefore, we now seldom use any names of parson for the naming of a scientific word.

During my short research life, I encountered two names with a good sense of naming: one is the scientific word and the other is the conference name.

Whispering gallery mode

This name clearly shows what kind of mode is generated, which is better than a name like Rayleigh mode. From the name, we can imagine how a wave propagates inside a cavity.

Focus on Microscopy

This conference name doesn’t include “conference” but we can easily guess that “focus on” represents deep discussions. The “focus on” also derives from the focus of a lens, in my guess. This kind of double meaning, which we can guess easily, makes me feel a sense of naming.

When I develop a new technique or new science, I try to make a good name with a sense of naming. But I also wonder if a scientific word was named after my name.
